An extensive description of what happens on the route can be read in the program booklet of the Royal Route. Below you can read a brief overview of the activities at the press boxes.

Welcome lane and reception (P1)

The King’s Day celebrations begin already at the Amphion theatre. From that location, two-stroke cross-motorcycles, electric mopeds and special bicycles take the Royal bus through the Welkomstlaan. On the Welkomstlaan we overtake the bus in the Achterhoek way; with an honour guard of flag bearers. From the press box you can see the end of this avenue where the Royal family gets out of the bus. After the official reception by the King’s Commissioner and the mayor, the band Normaal performs.

Kings and queens from the region and across the border (P2)

After a splashing welcome, the members of the Royal family make their way to the traditional bird shooting. Every shooting club in the Achterhoek has a royal couple. They became a royal couple because they shot the wooden bird during the bird shooting.

Art & Culture, a journey through tradition and innovation (P3)

Via multiple stages in the Mark Tennantplantsoen we take the royal family on a journey through our tradition and innovation. There are various dances and dance styles to see and here Achterhoek music sounds with young talent.

Ode to the Achterhoek kitchen table (P4)

In the Achterhoek, everything happens at the kitchen table. That’s where we make the most beautiful plans together. The City Farmer of Doetinchem, Ellen Willems, receives the Royal Family at her kitchen table. The family gets to know local farmers and the chefs who make small dishes. There are 58 guests at the table, including people celebrating their birthday on April 27 and the oldest resident of Doetinchem. The farmyard has a view of the Sportlaan, where an orange ball gets athletes moving.

The small Vijverberg (P5)

The family arrives at the stadium. The stadium announcer welcomes the players. Then the family will compete in three groups in a quiz. From the stadium you have a view of the Hamburgerpoort, which is renamed Koningspoort for one day on 26 April.

Location of short press conference for media by invitation (P6)

This press box is not included in the arrangements.

The Other Side and Closure (P7)

The program will conclude on the festival grounds at the Doetinchemse Walmolen, on the banks of the Oude IJssel. There, Doetinchem will wave goodbye to the members of the Royal Family after, among other things, a spectacular performance by Suzan & Freek accompanied by the 60-piece orchestra of Phion, a word of thanks from the King and the mayor and then the Wilhelmus.

Along the route there are 6 press boxes, divided into two arrangements. From there the media can report. Journalists are taken to the different boxes by supervisors. We do everything we can to have everyone take their place in the right box on time. The press arrangements are a service and not an obligation. Every journalist is free to report outside the boxes among the public.

To ensure that they are not overloaded with requests, we choose to take care of the coordination ourselves. You can therefore email your request for a report to [email protected].

Chapter Welcome Avenue

  1. Trial and motorcycle club Zelhem: this motorcycle club shows what it has to offer in the Welkomstlaan.
  2. Flag bearers of the Achterhoek shooting clubs: a long line of flag bearers welcome the Royal Family.
  3. Van Raam: this manufacturer of special bicycles from the Achterhoek region cannot be missed in the procession of two-wheelers that precede the bus.
  4. Niels Willems, Brekr: in addition to Van Raam bicycles, several Brek’rs will also be riding ahead of the bus with the Royal family.

Chapter: A Traditional Welcome

  1. Shooting kings and queens from the region and across the border play the leading role in this chapter. Several of these kings and queens are willing to cooperate in reports in the run-up to King’s Day.

Chapter: Art & Culture, a journey through tradition and innovation

  1. Louise te Poele, artist from Winterswijk: Louise enchants us with her colorful and layered still lifes, in which photography, painting and installations come together in an innovative way. Her work tells stories, sketches new horizons and invites viewers to wonder and discover.
  2. Britt Lam, Studio In Dans: Britt’s work captures emotions in motion. Her performances challenge dancers and audiences to embrace authenticity and see the beauty of imperfection. On King’s Day, she brings that philosophy to Doetinchem, in a unique performance that takes the audience into a story of expression and connection.
  3. Sander Berendsen: Sander is a versatile musician, composer and educationalist from the Achterhoek. For King’s Day 2025, Sander wrote a song as an ode to the Achterhoek. The song will be performed grandly by an occasional choir from MPG Gaanderen and the Amphion Musical School, accompanied by a 14-piece live band.

Chapter: ‘Ode to the Achterhoek kitchen table’

  1. Marielle de Vries, sustainable textiles: Marielle is the champion of the sustainable textile movement in the Achterhoek and dresses the people on the farm with beautiful custom-made clothing. All from discarded garments.
  2. Klein Broekhuizen & bakery Kaspers: Summer strawberries from Klein Broekhuizen are harvested and processed by bakery Kaspers into cakes for all the people from the Achterhoek who celebrate their birthday on the same day as the King.
  3. Jara van Rooij, cheesemaker: Jara makes cheese on the farm during King’s Day. A beautiful craft that produces beautiful regional products!
  4. Jeroen ter Maat, Carpenter: Jeroen hammers together the wooden Achterhoek kitchen. A beautiful job and an important piece of decor in this chapter!

Chapter: Sports Avenue from 0 to 100 and ‘The small Vijverberg’

  1. Piet Karemaker, chairman VVG: VVG will be put in the spotlight during the afternoon program because of its 100th anniversary. VVG is thinking about possibilities to participate in a record attempt.
  2. Lisa Meyer, St. Wheels for Dancing: Lisa is in an electric wheelchair and does wheelchair dancing. She will participate at the Sportlaan where she will show her dancing skills. Lisa dances at a competitive level and has already won many prizes.

  3. Rianne te Kaat, 3D street artist: Rianne creates a beautiful 3D artwork to strengthen the King’s Birds at the King’s Gate.

Chapter: Doetinchem past, present and future

  1. Saskia Bos, Bag for the Future: Bag for the Future makes school bags for children living in poverty or for children from war zones. In this way, they give them a flying start in education. The cycling children in this chapter carry such a bag to give ‘Bag for the Future’ the attention it deserves.
  2. RoosArt: Roos has already put her stamp on several places in Doetinchem. Her striking works of art give Doetinchem more character. On April 26, she will make a work of art of the old Cattle Market as an ode to the history of Doetinchem.
  3. Hermina de Vries, project leader KalmAn: ‘De Keet’ is often a concept in the province. Also in the Achterhoek. In collaboration with ‘Kalm an’ we put the shack in a positive spotlight: as a place for togetherness, connection and neighbourliness.
